The Rev. Henry Townsend organized twenty members to begin the Church of St. John the Evangelist. On the September 20, 1845, the church became incorporated with Wardens, Joseph Marshall and Jonathan Stott; and Vestrymen, Thomas Marshall, John Stewart, William Kelly, George Chittenden, William Pilkington, Lewis Whitlock, Covington Guion, and William Wright.
In 1847, the church building was erected, at a cost of $12,000, in the image of the church in Stockport, England. The church was consecrated on July 3, 1847 by Bishop Heathcote De Lancey. By 1878, the church had grown to over 170 members.
The annual Dutch Supper is the oldest continuous acitivty of the parish dating back nearly 100 years.
In 1989, St. John began holding Community Day, which is free to all residence of Stockport. The event is held on the grounds of St. John and includes a chicken barbeque, music, and acitivties for all ages.
